Timing is everything, right? Somehow I managed to make a big decision and the timing couldn't have been more precise.
I must talk to a thousand people a day. Sometimes more. When I'm carrying my clipboard around getting petition signatures, I find myself campaigning more than really would be necessary just to get that ONE SIGNATURE. On Thursday I spoke for over an hour to a lady who wanted to know my views on health care, abortion, gay marriage.....the Sunnis, the Kurds, the Iraquis.....
None of this would EVER have anything to do with a seat on our City Council but she had to make herself feel better about signing my petition. And believe it or not, I run into this every day. A petition page has room for 15 signatures, and to fill one page in a day is a miracle. Because sometimes it takes 15 hours of talking to get them.
So....back to the timing thing.
I like to compare it in my mind to the whole Obama mystique. He used the Hope and Change ticket to advance in the election and his timing couldn't have been better because people were tired of the old white guys who've been running the country. And now that mentality has spread to our little city. I never thought it would be really necessary to have my picture on campaign items, but people are saying over and over to me, "Good, I'm glad to see a younger person running. This City Council needs some young blood."
Then I read the online forums. They're saying the same thing.
Luckily, my friend Kenny set up a little studio in his garage last July (110 degrees in there, I must add...) and I dressed up....and we took pictures. Thus, the "Legitimate Me" series of photos. And those suckers get used EVERYWHERE.
It's even on my car....
